Overview

Together with all financial organisations, banks must have a reliable continuous power supply solution in place to ensure that all business systems maintain operation in the increasingly likely event of mains power failure. Bank of Cyprus UK turned to Shenton Group to provide an emergency generator solution that, in combination with an Uninterruptible Power Supply, now ensures reliable continuous power in the face of any break in mains electricity.

The Problem

Security, lighting, communications, customer services and of course, data integrity, depend wholeheartedly on continuous power supplies. Across the banking sector, time is money, and for Bank of Cyprus UK, complete independence from the increasingly unstable National Grid was a necessity. With National Grid reserve power reaching it’s lowest levels in recent years, the prospect of mains power failure is one that the finance sector is now increasingly taking steps to safeguard itself against.

Bank of Cyprus UK was not hesitant to address an effective power management strategy. However, in densely populated areas where space is at a premium, companies may not have the room to accommodate a standby generator and fuel tank, or simply may not have the budget.

Solution

Bank of Cypress UK selected Shenton Group’s Power Call service. A cost effective and space-saving solution, Power Call negates the need for large capital expenditure by providing a contract whereby a standby generator is supplied on an emergency callout basis.

Richard Meek, Strategic Director for Shenton Group explains: “The solution we provided Bank of Cyprus UK means that the organisation will experience zero power down-time in the event of mains power failure. When a power cut occurs, the Bank of Cyprus UK’s Uninterruptible Power Supply instantly steps in to supply battery backup power whilst Power Call’s 24/7 control room despatches a generator from a local depot”.

Upon arrival, the Shenton Group engineer connects the emergency generator to a pre-fitted, weatherproof connection point and advises the customer to switch over to the generator. An indicator lamp is fitted to the changeover switch to advise the customer when the mains power is restored.

Outcomes

Bank of Cyprus UK is now completely protected from mains power failure. As their UPS instantly takes over in the event of power failure, Shenton Group’s Power Call service ensures that the company has emergency power in situ and connected up within a target time of less than one hour, with Shenton Group providing a guaranteed commitment of just three hours.

Since it was launched in January 2005, Power Call has received a large number of responses and orders from companies across a wide range of market sectors, as well as financial, and includes; comms networks, FM companies, healthcare organisations, SME’s, local authorities and nationwide multi-site applications. With the demand for emergency power set to grow at 7% per annum over the next five years due to increasingly extreme weather and a less secure mains power supply, Shenton Group is on-hand to protect companies, just as it does Bank of Cyprus UK.

About Shenton Group

Shenton Group is the UK’s leading technical expert in standby power, uninterruptible power supplies, and combined heat and power supplies. The company provides power solutions to organisations spanning a broad array of industries that rely on continuous power supplies and includes; education, finance, telecoms, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, IT, government, utilities, and sport and leisure.

Providing emergency power generator access 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year through a nationwide network of power generator engineers and depots, Shenton Group’s Power Call aims to have a generator on-site and running within one hour of a power failure. Shenton Group’s record for delivering an emergency standby generator is just 23 minutes and the company is so confident of it’s response times and efficiency that it guarantees generator power within three hours – or your money back.

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems , complete with Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) Panels, also referred to as Automatic Transfer (ATS) Boards, monitor the incoming AC mains supply. With no break in power, the UPS activates the standby power supply when mains power fails. When the mains supply returns, the AMF Panel controls a return to the mains supply.

Shenton Group’s standby generator range includes single and three phase generator solutions, ranging from 10kVA to 3.2MVA. All include a full range of weatherproof canopies to meet sound attenuation levels; proven industry-leading control systems and switchgear hardware; integral bunded base-frame fuel tanks and fuel management systems; containerised modular solutions; custom built drop-over acoustic canopies; and skid-mounted ‘open’ sets for specific applications.
