Overview

A private residence in rural West Sussex experiencing regular power cuts required continuous power supplies to the main building, as well as power to a specialised aquarium. Working to a tight deadline in the run-up to Christmas, Shenton Group provided a continuous power solution comprising a 33kVA standby generator with a 100A 3ph AMF Panel, fully supported by a generator maintenance contract.

Problem

Increasingly depleted National Grid reserve power supplies mean that many more rural properties will experience blackouts. This was the case for a private client whose residential property is located remotely and at the end of a power line, thus compounding their issue of regular power cuts. In most cases, properties located towards the end of power lines suffer more frequent power failures.

The client’s main priority was a reliable power supply for marine aquarium installations. However, Christmas was fast approaching, and with power requirements heightening for heating, lighting, as well as power for cooking to feed Christmas guests, the client opted to put the whole house on the system. This left a window of just under one month for installation and operation of the new diesel generator system.

Shenton Group Managing Director, Jody Meek added; “An additional challenge for the client lay in the property being located within woodland grounds. On top of regular power cuts, falling trees during storms were damaging power lines. Shenton Group is highly proficient with the diesel generator solution we recommended and subsequently installed, and we strive to work tightly to client deadlines. This project was no exception”.

Solution

To manage the peak demand of the house, Shenton Group installed a 33kVA Generator with a 100A 3ph AMF Panel, a size that can also be used to support smaller sized commercial properties. This option provides an output of 50amps a-phase on a 3-phase power supply.

The generator dimensions for this project were 2.4m long x 1.1 wide x 1.8 high. Installed near the driveway of the property, the fuel tank in the base of the generator was sized to allow for 31 hours of use. The generator needed to fit on a pre-cast concrete slab, hidden by a brick built wall. By client request, cabling had to be run in trenching and hidden from view, thus maintaining the rural aesthetic of the property.

With the client’s Christmas deadline in mind, receiving the order on the 15th November, Shenton Group manufactured, supplied, installed and fully commissioned the system by the 20th December.

In addition to the backup generator solution, the client opted for peace of mind with a Shenton Group generator maintenance contract, providing a 24 hour, seven days per week emergency response service.

Outcomes

Having successfully installed the backup generator and AMF panel to satisfy the client’s Christmas deadline, the client’s property, including marine aquarium, enjoyed continuous power supplies throughout and beyond the Christmas period.

It was noted that, in the two weeks over the Christmas period, the generator had run for around 100 hours (4.2 days), providing continuous power to keep the house lit and its occupants warm and fed.

Shenton Group’s Jody Meek commented; “It was of course a very timely installation and project. As was the motivational concern of the client, the property did indeed experience power cuts to National Grid power supplies over the Christmas period. Without Shenton Group’s solution, Christmas guests, and also the client’s aquarium, would have been without power for considerable amounts of time.” Jody added; “With National Grid reserve power margins dropping to their lowest levels in recent years, both businesses and residential properties are looking to manage their own continuous power supplies in far greater numbers and Shenton Group has a continuous power supply solution to suit all sizes of properties”.

The client now enjoys complete security from National Grid mains power failures, as well as the assurance of expert support from Shenton Group’s generator maintenance service.
