Overview

A busy Wembley-based furniture store needed to replace its outdated and insufficient standby generator. Knowing only too well the importance of having a reliable continuous power supply, in order to maintain trading in the event of power outages, the company turned to Shenton Group to supply it’s new 275kVA standby generator with 2670 litre bunded fuel tank.

Problem

When any retailer experiences power outages, it not only spells an end to regular trading, but a cessation to back-end operations too, with IT, communications and security infrastructure often being affected.

As part of one of Europe’s leading furniture and homeware brands, the client’s large 36,000m2 Wembley store experiences high footfall and turnover that both need protecting and maintaining under all circumstances. This includes the ever-present threat of mains power failure, thanks to the National Grid experiencing some of its lowest reserve power levels in recent years.

Solution

Chosen for its ability to provide a fast, turnkey solution, Shenton Group devised a continuous power supply solution for the client. Shenton Group Managing Director, Jody Meek explained: “With all large retailers, large areas need lighting, along with other essential services requiring continuous power”. In this instance, two small IT rooms, as well as fridges and freezers in the store’s main food service preparation areas for both its public and staff canteens, required continuous power, as too did the store’s smoke extractor fans and main fire panel.

Removing the old 200kVA generator rom the building, Shenton Group provided a more capable 275kVA standby generator, as well as a 2660 litre fuel tank and a power pipe from the generator to the tank. Shenton Group engineers also installed two new cables with control upgrades to the system’s LV panel.

Outcomes

“The service provided by Shenton Group and its on-site engineers, from initial tender interview through to Valuation Engineering (VE ) and fitting, was very good and well actioned” said the company’s Construction Project Manager, UK and Ireland.

In the event of power outages of any severity, the Wembley store will continue to enjoy a continuous power supply that enables the operation of all key elements of the business, including lighting, catering, and IT, all of which allow the store to stay open and staff to remain operational.
